Our Beginning: A Sketch in the Dark
Sunmoly was born out of frustration — and hope.
Our founder, Moly Jean Baptiste, a queer, plus-size designer from New Orleans, spent years working behind the scenes in the fashion industry. She was constantly told her designs were “too much,” “too bold,” or “not commercially viable” — code for not made for bodies like hers.
After one too many meetings where she was told to “make it more slimming,” Moly did what she always does when the world tells her no: she created something of her own. That night, she sketched the first Sunmoly design — not for a market, not for approval, but for freedom.
